| Comments | "Interviewer: Is
there an inherent mood in every key and mode?
Steve Morse: More in every mode than every key. Chords suggest moods. but I'm not one of those people who thinks an F is a whole lot different than an E, pitch-wise. A mode, to me, is just a convenient way of describing a group of key tones. Once I understood what a Dorian mode was, I would never think of it as part of the major scale. I would just think of it as a minor flat 7 regular 6th scale. That's it. Never another thought about it. Of course that has a certain mood. I think of the Mixolydian as a major flat 7 scale. I never worry about which major scale it's related to. With modes it's best to just think about what they sound like rather than what major scale they come from, although it is good to know where they come from so you can conceptualize what notes they are in case you forget. But the easiest way is just to know what they contain, this is a dominant 7th with a major 3rd or minor 3rd, that kind of thing." [a] "I had to post this message concerning the fact that Steve Morse isn't a perfect pitch possessor: he has himself admitted it, in public, at a guitar clinic, in France circa 96/98. Morse has also said that PP wasn't a very valuable gift for a rock musician." [2] |
